If you don’t have a relationship of trust with your employees, you’ll feel like you need to do everything yourself to make sure it’s done right. You’ll be running around everywhere, doing every job in the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the office will realize you don’t expect much from them, so they won’t do much. Soon, either the work won’t be done at all, or you’ll end up giving yourself too much responsibility.

It doesn’t need to be that way. You don’t need to carry the entire company on your shoulders. Popular business writer Jeff Haden is right when he says, “No one accomplishes anything worthwhile on his own. Great bosses focus on providing the tools and training to help their employees better do their jobs.”

But how? Clearly, in order to make smart decisions, you’ll need access to accurate, up-to-the-minute information – and that’s where the importance of a cloud CRM system comes in. But the human side of the equation is no less important. Whether your company headquarters are in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia or Myanmar, the same rules apply to everyone: Without a proper level of trust and support, no team can win – or even survive – in the long term.

I turned to my local head of HR. I asked her to share with me one thing that she did not like about my leadership. I reassured her that I truly wanted to know, and would be thankful for the feedback.

She told him that, one time, her team had completed a task but never received any thanks from the management. After listening to this story:

I committed to her that I would do my best to be more thoughtful in the future. As I expressed my commitment, you could see the relief in her eyes. She was genuinely pleased to have shared her feedback and receive positive reinforcement … [and soon] trust had been re-established.

It’s okay to make mistakes. It’s okay to be wrong. It’s okay if you don’t have all the answers. The problem begins when you start to pretend you’re always right. Soon, you start pulling yourself up by pushing other people down.

Yes, it’s hard to say sorry. But it’s even harder to manage an office that is afraid to talk to you. If someone performed a task incorrectly, it doesn’t always mean they were lazy. Maybe it was because the instructions weren’t clear. Maybe they didn’t have the tools they needed. Maybe they weren’t trained well.

Whether your business is in Thailand, Indonesia, Bangladesh, the Philippines, or another country with a unique business culture, human nature nevertheless remains the same – and it responds positively to respect and encouragement. A good manager listens more than he talks, and gives words of encouragement and support. A good manager values communication and connection, and learns from his mistakes.

The question of how to manage a business will always be a tricky one, but there are some rules to keep in mind as you go. A good manager is always looking for ways to make work easier for everyone else in the office. And once again, that means being able to make decisions using the right information.
